What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that views the body as a whole. It recognises the important connection between the structures of the body and how it works.

Osteopaths aim to assist healing by focusing on how the muscles, skeleton, joints, nerves, connective tissue, circulation and internal organs function together as a single unit. The goal of Osteopathic care is to address the cause of pain, not just the symptoms.

This is done through a detailed examination of the entire body and consideration of factors that influence health and well-being such as lifestyle factors, injuries and a medical history.

Treatment consists of a wide range of hand-on techniques. These include stretching and massage of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments), as well as mobilisation and manipulation of specific joints and soft tissues.

Who is Osteopathy for?

Osteopathy is for all ages, from newborns to the elderly.

Frequently asked questions

At your first appointment, you will have forms to fill out which consist of information relating to your presenting complaint and a relevant medical history. These will be discussed with your osteopath to help build a case history. A physical examination will then be performed which involves moving your muscles and joints and possibly other clinical tests. These will allow your osteopath to make a diagnosis and to determine the most appropriate treatment techniques to be used. As well as a hands-on treatment, your osteopath may provide lifestyle advice and exercises/stretches. If necessary, you may be referred to another medical practitioner to meet your specific needs.
Comfortable clothing, especially active wear, is the most appropriate as we will usually move parts of your body throughout the consultation. However, we understand that it is not always possible to arrive in this sort of clothing. Items of clothing may need to be removed to allow your osteopath to accurately examine and palpate, as well as for some treatment techniques. Gowns are also available to get changed into if you wish.
The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) offers a subsidy for the cost of osteopathic treatment when the injury is the result of an accident. Your osteopath is an ACC registered practitioner and therefore treats patients who are covered under this scheme. You can discuss whether your specific injury is eligible for an ACC subsidy at your appointment. For more information about how ACC works, please visit www.acc.co.nz
